TRANSrisk Policy Workshop "Is it profitable to move away from coal in Poland?", 28 November 2018, Warsaw, Poland

Date:
Tuesday, 27 November, 2018 - 17:00

TRANSrisk partner Institute for Structural Research (IBS) organised the policy workshop "Is it profitable to move away from coal in Poland?" which was held on 28th of November 2018, at IBS premises in Warsaw, Poland.

At the workshop the costs and benefits of the potential decarbonisation of the Polish power sector were presented. Poland has expressed the desire to take climate action and reduce the environmental impact of its energy sector. However, this transition will pose social implications, i.e. reduction of jobs in the energy production from coal, since the majority of the energy mix is based on coal. Thus, the workshop presented the consequences (both positive and negative) of the two transition pathways for the Polish energy sector, namely decarbonisation or no decarbonisation. Starting point of the discussion were the results of the TRANSrisk case study in Poland, as summarised in the report "Risks associated with the decarbonisation of the Polish power system".
