TRANSrisk partners JIN and CE have published an article on the special issue of JIQ Magazine exclusively for the TRANSrisk side event "Assessing mitigation pathway risk and uncertainty: case studies in the Netherlands, Kenya and Chile" at COP22.

The article explores the environmental impacts of livestock farming systems. It focuses on the Dutch agricultural sector and the possible transition pathways towards low GHG emmissions. There are 7 transition pathways recognised (namely Reduction of animal protein consumption, Reduction of the livestock, Improving conversion efficiency, Promote the production and consumption of low-GHG animal feed products, Establishing energy savings, Produce more renewable energy, Integrated Manure Management).

Followingly, two of these pathways, Integrated Manure Managementare & Reduction of the livestock, are analysed in detail. Moreover the article emphasises the significance of multipurpose transition pathways, i.e. pathways which address environmental issues in one go while remaining economically viable and socially acceptable. Afterwards, the impact of nation-wide transition is explored. Lastly, an assessment of the two pathways is implemented and next step is presented.

The next step within the TRANSrisk framework is to quantify the side-effects of the identified transition pathways with the help of the macroeconometric Energy-Environment-Energy model (E3ME), in order to be able to further explore their relative importance when it comes to implementing low-carbon transition pathways in the livestock sector.
